Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
It is located east of the Dominican Republic, approximately 1,600 km southeast of Miami.
Puerto Rico is one of the biggest and best rum-producing nations in the world.
The spirit is also a big part of the island’s history. Creole sugar cane rootstocks were brought from La Española (Dominican Republic) in 1506.
Eleven years later, the first sugar mill was established. Rum production began in the 1650s.
Today, more than 80% of the rum consumed in the USA hails from this island.
Don Q
In 1861, Don Juan Serrallés founded a small sugar cane plantation.
In 1865, he produced his first few casks of rum using a copper pot still from France. With that, the Serrallés family rum tradition had begun.
In 1934, the family launched Don Q. The brand is named for Don Quixote, the famous literary character from the family’s favorite novel.
In 1954, the original Piña Colada was created at The Hilton hotel in Old San Juan, by Ramon ‘Monchito’ Marrero. He was using Don Q Gold rum!
Today, Serrallés 6th generation is one of America’s oldest family-owned and operated companies.
The company is the leading rum producer in Puerto Rico. The brands have close to 70% market share.
