Old or New World wine-producing country? Its first grapevines were planted as early as the 1500s. European immigrants brought more varieties, particularly from Bordeaux, to Chile in the 1800s. With 4,300 kilometers of coastline along the Pacific Ocean, Chile produces wines that are both fruit-forward factor and herbaceous.<\/p>\n
Cabernet Sauvignon might be Chile\u2019s most important red variety, but Carmenere is the country\u2019s niche grape. 98% of the world\u2019s Carmenere is grown there. In 1997, Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Vi\u00f1a Concha y Toro, sealed a partnership agreement with a view to create an exceptional wine called Almaviva in Alto Maipo, Chile.<\/p>\n
The project gives rise to fine Chilean wines that benefit from a rich French winemaking know-how and the unique expression of this Central Valley terroir.<\/p>\n
The first vintage achieved immediate international success upon its launch in 1998.<\/p>\n

“Their second wine, the 2021 Epu is from the same terroir and vineyard in Puente Alto as Almaviva but comes from the younger vines, around 12 years on average. It has a ripe and heady nose, mellow acidity and intense notes of red peppers, ripe blackberries and cassis and some spiciness from the oak. It has a little less structure and softer tannins, making it more approachable than previous years, a profile that seems to be the signature of the year. It’s medium to full-bodied with velvety, more polished tannins, and it is more delicate and less concentrated, with more finesse.
