The climate of Puerto Rico is just right for producing the sugar cane from which rum (or ron, as the locals know it) is made.<br \/>\nThe spirit is also a big part of the island&#8217;s history. Juan Ponce de Le\u00f3n first brought Creole sugar cane rootstocks from La Espa\u00f1ola (Dominican Republic) in 1506. Eleven years later, the first sugar mill was established in A\u00f1asco. Rum production began in the 1650s.<br \/>\nToday, more than 80% of the rum consumed in the USA hails from this island.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7061&#8243; img_size=&#8221;400&#215;200&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Don Q<\/h5>\n<p>In 1861, Don Juan Serrall\u00e9s founded a small sugar cane plantation \u2013 the Hacienda Mercedita.<br \/>\nIn 1865, he produced his first few casks of rum using a five-tray copper pot still he had imported from France.
