Martinique, a French Caribbean Island, is mainly producing \u201cRhum Agricole\u201d, which is obtained by distilling of sugar cane juice.<\/p>\n
This kind of rum is more aromatic. To produce 10 litres of rum roughly 100 kg of sugar cane needs to be processed.<\/p>\n
In 1996, the Martinican Rhum Agricole obtained an AOC recognition, \u201cAppellation d\u2019Origine Contr\u00f4l\u00e9e\u2019\u2019 and is the only one so far.<\/p>\n
Like in Cognac or Armagnac, there are strict ageing conditions & appellations. All ageing & bottling must be done on the island.<\/p>\n

Rhum Cl\u00e9ment has been established in 1887 when Hom\u00e8re Cl\u00e9ment, physician and mayor of Le Fran\u00e7ois in Martinique, purchased a 43-hectare sugar plantation, Domaine de L\u2019Acajou.<\/p>\n
Inspired by the enjoyment of great brandies while studying in his early years in Paris, Hom\u00e8re mimicked the distillers of the great Armagnac\u2019s of southwestern France to perfect his method of rhum production known today as Rhum Agricole.<\/p>\n
Nowadays, Rhum Cl\u00e9ment has 8000 barrels patiently aged in their 5 historical cellars and is a leading producer of A.O.C. Martinique Rhum Agricole.<\/p>\n
Around 8% of the volume of each barrel is lost every year due to \u00ab evaporation \u00bb (or Angel share). Distilled in 1976, it rested for almost 20 years in oak barrels.<\/em><\/p>\n This Rum is marked by history. It was the spirit that marked the meeting between George Bush senior and Fran\u00e7ois Mitterrand, after the Gulf War. The two presidents tasted the 1976 vintage, on the grounds of the Habitation Cl\u00e9ment, in Le Fran\u00e7ois in Martinique.<\/p>\n On the nose the drinker should expect waves of sweet, canned fruit aroma, with a deep nuttiness and succulent cane note. The palate serves up the more fruit: pineapples and mangos, with a good dose of woodsmoke, oaky dried fruits and nutmeg spice.
