Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea.
\nThe island is now part of Spain but has been occupied very often in particular by Great Britain for most of the 18th century.
\nThe British left influence in terms of Architecture but also cuisine (today Menorcan chefs use far more butter than olive oil in their cooking) and beverages (local gin).
\nIndeed, Sailors and soldiers stationed on the island were unable to find their favourite drink, gin, in the local taverns. A group of Mahon craftsmen found a solution to the problem. They imported juniper berries, which were not native to the island, and distilled gin using wine alcohol from Mediterranean vineyards
\nToday the aromatic gin of Mahon is well known and is still produced in the traditional way, from a recipe which has not changed for three hundred years.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”7363″ img_size=”400×200″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n
Gin Xoriguer has been created at the beginning of the 20th century by Miguel Pons Justo, head of one of the first Menorcan families to produce the local gin.
\nTo reflect the family’s long history as millers, he named the gin after the emblem of his family’s old milling business: Xoriguer, the old windmill, built in 1784, in which many generations of the family had converted bushels of wheat to flour.
\nXoriguer Gin from Menorca is not derived from grain alcohol but from wine alcohol (eau de vie de vin), making it more akin to brandy.
