Fruits Liqueurs

Burgundy is not just famous for its wines but also for blackcurrant (cassis) which has been cultivated there for over four centuries. Since the famous crème de Cassis invention in 1841, the berry production has been developed. The nation’s distillers continue to produce some 16 million tons annually.
Associated with an aligoté white wine, another local speciality, Burgundy’s blackcurrant liqueur produces the famous kir aperitif. Its also used for many other recipes of cocktails.
Liqueur companies are also working with other local fruits like the Pêche de Vigne (peach from the vineyard) from the Burgundian slopes, Lloyd George Raspberries, Montmorency Sour Cherries, Chalonnaise Black Cherries or Monts du Lyonnais Soft Stone Apricot.
For Eaux-de-Vie, local companies buy local Williams pears from the orchards. And Marc and Fine de Bourgogne, the producers have supply from the best appellations in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune areas like Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée or Pommard.

Joseph Cartron

Joseph Cartron has been and remains a family business since 1882, with strong roots in the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges in the heart of Burgundy’s cru vineyards.
Since July 2011, Judith Cartron is President of the company, thus representing the fifth generation and the first woman at the head of the company.
For the production of its Crèmes and Liqueurs, the company selects the fruit varieties the closest in spirit to the Burgundian terroir, the most aromatic, those that are most likely to reveal their very singular perfume in pure alcohol and this even if they are more fragile, more costly and more difficult to find.
For the production of its Eaux-de-Vie, Joseph Cartron buys the whole harvest of Williams pears from the orchards, including the big fruits, the tastier, those usually kept for table consumption.

Calvados

Calvados is an apple brandy from Normandy in France.
Calvados is distilled from cider made from specially grown and selected apples, from over 200 varieties. They can be bitter, sweet, acid, sour or bitter-sweet.
The fruit is harvested and pressed into a juice that is fermented into a dry cider. It is then distilled into eau de vie. After ageing in oak casks, it can be sold as calvados as following:

*“Fine”: 2 years old minimum
*“VSOP”: 4 years
*“XO”: 6 years

Three different AOC appellations exist:
*Calvados (71% of total surface): Can be obtained by apples from the whole Normandy and be distilled only once in a column still.
*Calvados « Pays d’Auge » (28%): the apples must be produced in the Region Pays d’Auge, from selected varieties. 2 distillations in a pot still are necessary.
*Calvados «Domfrontais» (1%) : produced with minimum 30 % of pears.

Château du Breuil

Located in the midst of the Calvados region (Normandy), Château du Breuil has been a distillery transforming apples into Calvados, an apple brandy, since 1954.

Built in the early 16th century, the Château has been the residence of great noble French families and now is classified as a historical monument.

It is one of the rare Calvados distilleries to have integrated orchards of apple trees in the property, total 22,000 planted on 42 hectares.

Château du Breuil company produces more than 420,000 bottles every year. It is the N°2 AOC “Pays d’Auge” Calvados producer.

Provide around 18 liters Cider (+/- 5% Vol. Alc.)
Provide approximately 1 liter pure alcohol Calvados (100% Alc.)

Mauritius

Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres off the south-east coast of the African continent. The country, independent since 1968, is 1,864 square kilometres.
The Dutch were the first ones to settle down naming the island in honour of Prince Maurits van Nassau.
Mauritius was occupied successively by the Dutch (1598-1712) and later by the French (1715-1810).
The British captured the island in 1810, during the Napoleonic Wars through the Treaty of Paris. They agreed to respect the language and laws of the inhabitants. Considering the island as too small and insignificant for settlement, they kept the French business people in the place.
The French established a plantation economy of sugar cane and Rum industry following the French tradition (French oak, French alembics).

New Grove

In 1852, Dr Pierre Charles François Harel developed the concept of local distillation of rum in Mauritius, using only the finest local ingredients from his vast Pamplemousses Garden Estate. New Grove brand, part of this heritage, has been established in 2003 to produce a unique Mauritian rum that meets the international standards of top quality rums.
From the group estates covering over 6,000 hectares, only the finest canes of the best plots of the Domaine are selected. After being distilled from fresh molasses in the company distillery, the largest in Mauritius, the rums are aged in 30% new French Oak barrels and 70% old French oak barrel and Cognac barrels.

New Grove is 100% natural, no sugar added.
