Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States located between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic, east of the Dominican Republic, approximately 1,600 km southeast of Miami, Florida.
\nPuerto Rico is one of the biggest and best rum-producing nations in the world. The climate of Puerto Rico is just right for producing the sugar cane from which rum (or ron, as the locals know it) is made.
\nThe spirit is also a big part of the island’s history. Juan Ponce de Le\u00f3n first brought Creole sugar cane rootstocks from La Espa\u00f1ola (Dominican Republic) in 1506. Eleven years later, the first sugar mill was established in A\u00f1asco. Rum production began in the 1650s.

In 1861, Don Juan Serrall\u00e9s founded a small sugar cane plantation \u2013 the Hacienda Mercedita. \nIn 1865, he produced his first few casks of rum using a five-tray copper pot still he had imported from France. With that, the Serrall\u00e9s family rum tradition had begun.
\nIn 1934, the family launched Don Q. the brand is named for Don Quixote, the famous literary character from the family\u2019s favorite novel.
\nIn 1954, the original Pi\u00f1a Colada was created at The Caribe Hilton hotel in Old San Juan, by Ramon \u2018Monchito\u2019 Marrero using Don Q Gold rum!
