MASSOLINO Barolo DOCG “Margheria” 2016

HK$815.00

Atypical Serralunga soil. Less clay, a little more sand. Makes for a wine that is much more expressive and approachable. More similar to the wines of western Barolo with softer tannins. Margheria cru owned by Massolino is only 1.5 hectare with a production of 5,500 bottles max.

“Demonstrating Serralunga’s more elegant side thanks to soils that have higher than usual amounts of sand for the village, this offers enticing scents of red berry, iris, botanical herb and dark spice. Vibrant, structured and loaded with finesse, the linear palate offers crushed raspberry, dark cherry and star anise framed in taut, refined tannins. It’s vibrant and balanced, with bright acidity. *Cellar Selection* ” – Wine Enthusiast, 96 Points

Description
Piedmont
Piedmont

Located, as its name suggests, at the foot of the Alps bordering France and Switzerland, Piedmont is the second largest of Italy’s 20 regions, after Sicily.
Recognized for its industry like Fiat in Turin, Piedmont is also one of the greatest regions in the world in terms of cuisine (don’t forget the white truffles from Alba!) and wine!
With 42 DOC and 17 DOCG, Piedmont has more wine appellations than any other Italian region. Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera but also Moscato or Dolcetto are demanded all over the world.

The history of the Massolinos and their wine became entwined with the history of Serralunga d’Alba in 1896, when Giovanni founded the estate. Giovanni was the very first person to bring electricity to the village.
The first wine cellar was built by Giuseppe, son of the founder Giovanni, who, together with his sister Angela, extended his estate into the best soils. At that time, Giuseppe had six children. Three of them followed in their father’s footsteps, expanding the estate with the purchase of cru vineyards which are authentic jewels: Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda.
In the 1990’s Franco and Roberto, both oenologists, joined the family estate and put Massolino as one of the best Barolo producers.
