BOECKEL Alsace Grand Cru AOC Riesling “Wiebelsberg” 2018

HK$330.00

From the area known as “Wiebelsberg”, a south/southeast facing hillside above the village of Andlau The gritty soil, steep slope and the river running at the bottom of the valley all contribute to creating the ideal microclimate to form a Grand Cru.

“Richness and texture are expressed in ripe pear and orange-zest notes on the nose of this wine. The palate continues the generous theme with a juicy and rounded body of peach and pear flavors, all made precise by full citrus freshness. It finishes dry and long.” – Wine Enthusiast, 93 Points

Description
Alsace
Alsace

Alsace region can be found in the very eastern side of France in a valley along the Rhine River – a river that separates France and Germany. On the other side of the river is Baden, a German wine region that produces wines in a similar style.

Recognized in 1962, today the protected designation of origin AOC Alsace represents 72% of the production, 5% for AOC Alsace Grand Cru, and 23% for AOC Crémant d’Alsace. About 90% of the wine produced is white.

In 2011, AOC Alsace was supplemented with two geographical names: the Communales (villages) and the “Lieux-dits” (localities).

Vines were grown on 15,600 hectares in 119 villages. Mainly 7 grape varieties: Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris but also Pinot Noir – the only red wine in Alsace, Sylvaner and Muscat.

In contrast to other parts of France where wines take their name from their regions of production, Alsace wines are labelled by grape variety.

Boeckel

The Boeckel family, established in Mittelbergheim-Alsace for almost 500 years, founded the commercial enterprise in 1853.

At the end of the 19th century a large part of wines was already bottled – in advance for that time – and exported.  Today Jean-Daniel and Thomas Boeckel continue to produce high quality wines on 24 hectares of vineyards including 3 ha of Grands Crus, all cultivated according to the rules of the organic farming.

The aging process sets the Boeckel wines apart from other wine producers. Aged for 12 months or longer in large oak casks of 75 years, elegant yet characteristic Boeckel wines are controlled to perfection.

The winery is producing the 7 varieties from Alsace including unique Sylvaners in Zotzenberg Grand Cru (the only Sylvaner Grand Cru), concentrated and powerful Riesling, but also unfiltered Pinot Blanc, Cremant, Pet Nat!

The wines are well recognized by French critics like Revue des Vins de France or international like Wine Enthusiast.
