Normandy is one of the most famous destinations in France and in the world, most notably for its architecture, historic D-Day Landing Beaches, fresh-from-the-harbour seafood or cheeses like the famous camembert, symbol or ambassador of the country everywhere.

Normandy is a significant cider-producing region, and also produces calvados, a distilled cider or apple brandy. Now, Normandy is a land of Whisky! The mild, humid Normandy climate, with the sea not far off and the Touques river winding around the estate and its lake, lends itself perfectly to the ageing of Single Malts.

Chateau Le Breuil & Maison Boinaud

The result of the collaboration between two family distilleries, La Spiriterie Française, Château du Breuil – Normandie and Maison Boinaud, a new range of French whisky under the brand name Le Breuil is born.
To create this whisky, a long work of selections, tastings and iterations was carried out between Philippe Etignard, Cellar Master of Château du Breuil and the cellar teams of Maison Boinaud. A meticulous marriage between Le Breuil Single Malt – Origine and Maison Boinaud Single Malt Whisky allows to obtain balanced and complementary organoleptic characteristics of the Whiskies.

Areas near the Seine (the former Upper Normandy region) contain a higher concentration of industry. Normandy is a significant cider-producing region, and also produces calvados, a distilled cider or apple brandy.

Normandy seems now a land of Whisky! The mild, humid Normandy climate, with the sea not far off and the Touques river winding around the estate and its lake, lends itself perfectly to the ageing of Single Malts.

Le Breuil

With whisky Le Breuil, Château du Breuil has succeeded in creating the first French single malt whisky produced entirely from Golden Promise barley, a variety known for producing whiskies with an intense malty character that are long and silky on the palate.

By selecting this variety for its first range, Château du Breuil has favoured quality over quantity. Indeed, Golden Promise barley has the particularity of having a low yield per hectare (1/3 lower than current varieties) and pure alcohol (10% lower than current varieties).

Double distillation in pots still. Maturing in 200/250L French & American barrels.

Calvados

Calvados is an apple brandy from Normandy in France.
Calvados is distilled from cider made from specially grown and selected apples, from over 200 varieties. They can be bitter, sweet, acid, sour or bitter-sweet.
The fruit is harvested and pressed into a juice that is fermented into a dry cider. It is then distilled into eau de vie. After ageing in oak casks, it can be sold as calvados as following:

*“Fine”: 2 years old minimum
*“VSOP”: 4 years
*“XO”: 6 years

Three different AOC appellations exist:
*Calvados (71% of total surface): Can be obtained by apples from the whole Normandy and be distilled only once in a column still.
*Calvados « Pays d’Auge » (28%): the apples must be produced in the Region Pays d’Auge, from selected varieties. 2 distillations in a pot still are necessary.
*Calvados «Domfrontais» (1%) : produced with minimum 30 % of pears.

Château du Breuil

Located in the midst of the Calvados region (Normandy), Château du Breuil has been a distillery transforming apples into Calvados, an apple brandy, since 1954.

Built in the early 16th century, the Château has been the residence of great noble French families and now is classified as a historical monument.

It is one of the rare Calvados distilleries to have integrated orchards of apple trees in the property, total 22,000 planted on 42 hectares.

Château du Breuil company produces more than 420,000 bottles every year. It is the N°2 AOC “Pays d’Auge” Calvados producer.

New range of Rum from Château du Breuil.
After distillation and maturation in their original country, all the rums are matured for several months in the cellars of the premium Calvados producer before being bottled. The refining by the Cellar Master is different for each origin.

THE MATURING OF THE CELLAR MASTER

This rum agricole from the French Caribbean island, Marie Galante, has been matured in the cellars of Château du Breuil, staying in oak barrels.

TASTING NOTES

COLOUR: golden
NOSE: a powerful bouquet, with fragrances of fresh sugar cane and kaffir lime. Perceptible notes of exotic fruits (pineapple, guava), spices and vanilla.
FLAVOUR: an explosive attack of sugar cane juice, citrus and ginger, progressively expanding into notes of creole spices, pepper and flowers. The finish is intense and fresh,
delivered by flavours of mocha, vanilla and orange blossom.

This rum from Guyana has been matured in the cellars of Château du Breuil, staying in American oak barrels.

TASTING NOTES

COLOUR: mahogany brown
NOSE: an exceptionally powerful and aromatic bouquet, with characteristic esters and banana notes, followed by mineral and olive fragrances.
FLAVOUR: powerful flavours of yellow banana, with the added complexity of red fruit, caramel and vanilla notes. A well-rounded finish of preserved fruit and oxidative notes.

This rum from Canary Islands-Spain has been matured in the cellars of Château du Breuil, staying in American oak barrels.

TASTING NOTES

COLOUR: orangey brown, with mahogany highlights
NOSE: exceptionally smooth and opulent. An aromatic foundation of cane juice is overlaid by notes of mild spices, honey , raisins and citrus zest
FLAVOUR: a smooth attack, progressively revealing mellow tannins with notes of light tobacco and cocoa.

This rum from Thailand has been matured for several months in the cellars of Château du Breuil. Its stay in American oak barrels gives it notes of coconut, pepper and liquorice.

TASTING NOTES

COLOR: Old gold

NOSE: A nose marked by plants with scents of liquorice, sage and bergamot. The whole is enhanced by notes of lime zest and pepper.

MOUTH: The palate is marked by warm flavors such as dark chocolate and caramel. The vegetal notes are more discreet. A final on the delicacy of coconut.
