A typical Serralunga soil. Margheria cru owned by Massolino is only 1.5 hectare with a production of 5,500 bottles max.

"I like the freshness and vivid, red-fruited character. Medium-bodied with firm, slightly chewy tannins. It’s compact and structured with a tense and lively aftertaste. Vivid and bright with hibiscus undertones to the orange and berry character. Try from 2027, but already very pretty." - James Suckling, 95 Points

"This Margheria Barolo is a stunning expression of elegance, with captivating high-toned fruit and delicate hints of strawberry tops. The palate is refined and graceful, with fine-grained tannins and mouthwatering acidity that enhance the pure, precise flavors. A true embodiment of finesse, this wine is a standout example of the cru's potential. Drink 2026-2045." - Wine Enthusiast, 94 Points

Grape: 100% Nebbiolo

The history of the Massolinos. became entwined with the history of Serralunga d’Alba in 1896, when Giovanni founded the estate.

Giovanni was the very first person to bring electricity to the village.

The first wine cellar was built by Giuseppe, son of the founder Giovanni, who, together with his sister Angela, extended his estate into the best soils.

At that time, Giuseppe had six children. Three of them followed in their father’s footsteps, expanding the estate.

They purchased Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda, cru vineyards which are authentic jewels.

Made entirely from fruit in the San Biagio vineyard, high in the hills above the sea. There is a constant breeze from offshore, combining with cold nights to preserve acidity, and stony limestone-rich soils give a cooling minerality and balance to the Cabernet Sauvignon/ Cabernet Franc mix. The wine is full of energy, densely woven and balanced, packed with black fruit, floral and herbal notes, and a long fine powerful finish. It is lovely now but has a great future.

"Spicy oak adds some black-bean and sandalwood character to the dark olives, cassis, baked red capsicum, ground black chocolate and some grilled thyme. A full-bodied Bolgheri Superiore, charged with dusty tannins that melt into the blackberry and cassis fruit on the palate. Lovely, cedary oak in the lingering finish. Drinkable now, but hold until 2025 for additional complexity." - James Suckling, 94 Points

Grape: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc

"Fresh and floral with orange peel, crab apples, and cranberries. Flowers. Full-bodied with a very fine line of tannins through the center palate. Lovely texture. Persistent finish.
With 42 DOC and 17 DOCG, Piedmont has more wine appellations than any other Italian region.

The most recognized grape variety is Nebbiolo named exactly for the arrival of this pre-harvest fog (called “nebbia” in Italian), which prolongs cluster hang time and allows full phenolic balance and ripeness. This grape is responsible for the exalted Piedmont wines of Barbaresco and Barolo, known for their ageability, firm tannins and hallmark aromas of tar and roses. Nebbiolo wines, despite their pale hue, pack a pleasing punch of flavor and structure. Barbaresco tends to be more elegant in style while Barolo is more powerful. Across the Tanaro River, the Roero region, and farther north, the regions of Gattinara and Ghemme, also produce excellent quality Nebbiolo.

Barbera is the most planted grape in Piedmont, beloved for its trademark high acidity, low tannin and juicy red fruit. Dolcetto, Piedmont’s other important red grape, is usually ready within a couple of years of release.

Rich bouquet with outstanding aromas obtained from the dried grapes: apricots and candied orange peel. Maybe the best sweet wine from Italy?

"A rich, luxurious sweetie, with flavors of orange glacée, pink grapefruit sorbet, spun honey, apple peel and butterscotch melting on the palate like cotton candy.

Aged 8 years in French oak barriques! Exceptional wine!
Tertiary aromas blend with chocolate, black and red fruit jam and sweet spices perceptions. The long aging shows an ample texture of balsamic wood facets, notes of incense, toasted components that merge into a lush and elegant texture.

“… Dense tannins are tightly knit to an expressive range of black cherry coulis, cured tobacco, cocoa powder, loamy earth and licorice snap flavors.

" Conterno’s 2005 Barolo Cascina Francia has developed in a very pretty, delicate wine. Open-knit and supple, the 2005 offers good depth and vibrancy to match its silky, nuanced personality. Interestingly, it is also the total stylistic opposite of the much more virile Monfortino." - 95pts by Vinous

In 1961 the two sons Giovanni and Aldo took over the family business. Aldo, however, did not share the house’s traditionalist philosophy and in 1969 he created his own estate (Aldo Conterno).
In 1974 with the purchase of the Cascina Francia vineyard, the winery put an end to the outsourcing of grapes. 1980 was the first vintage under the name Barolo Cascina Francia.
Today, the ultimate and purest expression of Barolo can be found in the bottles bearing Giacomo Conterno’s name. These wines are rich, powerful, well-structured and capable of long ageing in bottle.

Piedmont

Located, as its name suggests, at the foot of the Alps bordering France and Switzerland, Piedmont is the second largest of Italy’s 20 regions, after Sicily.

Recognized for its industry like Fiat in Turin, Piedmont is also one of the greatest regions in the world in terms of cuisine (don’t forget the white truffles from Alba!) and wine!

With 46 DOC and 4 DOCG, Piedmont has more wine appellations than any other Italian region.

Massolino

The history of the Massolinos. became entwined with the history of Serralunga d’Alba in 1896, when Giovanni founded the estate.

Giovanni was the very first person to bring electricity to the village.

The first wine cellar was built by Giuseppe, son of the founder Giovanni, who, together with his sister Angela, extended his estate into the best soils.

At that time, Giuseppe had six children. Three of them followed in their father’s footsteps, expanding the estate.

They purchased Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda, cru vineyards which are authentic jewels.

In the 1990’s Franco and Roberto, both oenologists, joined the family estate and put Massolino as one of the best Barolo producers.
